What if a curse is a fairy’s thesis? They do have hierarchies, a fairy gains mastery over certain enchantments etc. But they’re not much for writing, so a PhD or dissertation equivalent should be practical.

A fairy forms a hypothesis – true love will cure a beast, curiosity will overset reverence, this woman will brave three oceans and two continents for her man and this one will not – chooses a subject, and tests their hypothesis. They submit their findings and earn their ‘professorship’ when the curse is broken. If the subjects fail, the fairy tries again with different variables (leaving the poor subjects to their fate).

I was watching Agathe’s elated face in the new movie. That is the face of a woman who had lost her faith in people and been given it back. It’s definitely also a face I remember from uni after a grueling panel pronounces your work fit for publication.
