i like scifi/fantasy because i can talk about things without using their “real” names and in doing so paint with the feelings they evoke without distracting with their loaded term – also because it encrypts the feeling and lets me talk to other people who share the experience, in a way that is maybe less capable of being consumed and fetishized by the majority reader – there are scenes I’ve read (and wrote) that are seen as “weird” but that someone who lived through the same situation can instinctively feel, and we can regard each other in that space, in privacy.
