This is gonna be mean and it always seems to make this particular web community angry when I say it but there is such a thing as bad rhetorical tactics that, when employed, actually make people less likely to agree with you even when you’re right, and believe it or not, it’s your own damn fault, they aren’t being unfair. Methods are genuinely as important as Message and being right is absolutely meaningless if you employ methods that undermine the validity of your point. But more importantly, if you are openly unpleasant, hostile, and accusatory to everyone you encounter who would dare to even question your position let alone fail to praise it and thank you for it, and suddenly notice that nobody is willing to engage with your contributions, that’s not tone policing, you just have a shit personality and maybe more people would listen to what you had to say if you didn’t start every conversation on the assumption that the other person is going to wrong you and that they must be pre-emptively scolded.
Yeah I agree.
There’s a certain type of person who spends a lot of time on Tumblr just yelling at other people on here and calling them stupid. We all complain about Tumblr from time to time, but if 90% of your posts are “why can’t you stupid assholes unconditionally appreciate my genius words” then… why are you still on here? What’s the point? Is it really the fault of those stupid assholes you’re preaching to or maybe your own fault for being so abrasive and having poor social skills?
I don’t think people like that are even looking to try to sway other people to their POV so much as communicate to their followers how they feel on a given issue by using their ideological opponent as a foil/punching bag.
