Steve Harris is a god.
Bassists performing more or less the function of lead guitarists is great and all, and I love me some “John Entwistle on lead bass/Pete Townshend on rhythm guitar”, but Steve Harris is playing the role of a bassist. It’s even more impressive to stand out so much when playing in a rhythmic, riff-based style. Steve Harris doesn’t do bass solos; he just plays all these licks in and around the riffs. Even if he’s playing with the guitar, he’ll break off to play his own thing every few moments.
Again, if your band isn’t led by a bassist, what are you doing?
