chicago police also threatened eyewitnesses into silence, deleted footage of the incident from nearby restaurant security cameras and purposefully filed several fabricated several reports corroborating the cop’s lies about being provoked into shooting
National Coming Out Day is coming up (October 11) and I just want to remind everyone:
1) Please do not out anyone (even if you “think you are doing them a favor.” Trust me when I say you aren’t) and make sure you don’t accidentally do so.
2) It is okay to be in the closet. Please do not feel pressure to/obligated to come out because there so happens to be a Coming Out Day. (Do it for you if it’s what you want).
3) don’t “come out” as LGBT+ as a joke. Don’t “come out” as kinky/a furry/whatever, either.
4) Don’t force/coerce your friends and/or loved ones to come out, and do not get mad at them if they choose to stay closeted.
I’ve heard from a Reform rabbi that it’s okay for a Jewish person to take part in raising pigs so long as they themself won’t eat the pig (i.e. be the 4H leader for kid raising a 4H-pig). (Not exactly the same as keeping a pet pig, but if you read the opinion below you can see that keeping a pet pig would likely be more acceptable than helping raise one for meat.)
But I’ve also read lots of Hassidic and righter-wing Orthodox opinions that say NO. Here’s one from Chabad. The others have been in books I’ve borrowed, but were similar arguments with sometimes more extreme conclusions (i.e. a Jew shouldn’t visit pigs at a petting zoo).
I personally think that some of these more extreme opinions (i.e. I know of someone who takes pigs out of coloring books before giving them to their kids) have to do more with cultural aversion than religious obligation. But there are some grounds for some kinds of prohibitions.
I haven’t seen any opinions in the middle. If halachic acceptability is important to you, you should talk to your rabbi.
Not a stupid question at all. From a traditional point of view, it’s forbidden to raise pigs (Shulchan Aruch, Choshen Mishpat 409:2) This is specific to that animal, and does not apply to non-kosher animals in general. (For example, raising dogs and cats is fine)
My question for a rabbi (or someone on here who is comfy with Aramaic – although different folks might have different answers?) would be if keeping as a pet is definitely within the word being translated as “raising” or whether that term may be exclusive to livestock.
In light of the recent idiotic decision from the Senate, I am going to remember that there were incredibly brave women who spoke their truth and are now receiving crap for it. I stand with them.
you should probably ask an american lol but i’ll tell you this. ppl have already been losing the rights they fought for all this time, i read a lot of american right wing books and they’re in the end game of a 50 year plan. they invested their money into book presses to get their ideas out, local radio stations, tv, they put their ppl on the school boards, the water boards, the local council of the 5th district of whatever and they built this shit from the ground up. sure the climb wasn’t that steep since they’re after all doing what the slave owners who created this system that runs on the blood of the third world wanted but it’s undeniable to me that they know how to do grassroots on a level the white left can’t approach. and white liberals direct their focus mainly to major elections and ignore all the little positions on the ground. activism isn’t only giving speeches and trying to get yourself elected senator it’s also licking stamps, doing small community based organizing that connects with the work others are already doing, and a lot of drudge work. it’s not glamorous but if you don’t do it they will. dispense with all illusions. you are living in a white supremacist country that exports its horrors all over the world and is responsible for the misery and deaths of unthinkable numbers of ppl. the system works as its supposed to. the ruling class hates you and will not be voted out so make them fear you. start with that in mind rather than “what went wrong?”
