Anissa is such a good superhero because she became a superhero because she wanted to help people. She didn’t have some turning point or some tragedy happen to make her a superhero. Shes just always been an activist for helping people and once she got her superpowers, boom, she knew she wanted to use it to help others. Shes a minority character (black and lesbian) trying to make the world a better place and that makes her one of the most realistic superheroes I’ve ever seen. Even before becoming a superhero she was a strong activist which makes her becoming a superhero so realistic and in character. Ok thats all i love her thank you and good night.

“This Black Lightning experience means everything to me. I’m honored to be a part of history. I didn’t have a black female superhero to look up to as a kid, so to be that representation for little black girls is a responsibility that I don’t take lightly. We’ve also never seen a black lesbian superhero until now so again I’m honored to be the first and hopefully make way for more lesbian superheroes.” – Nafessa Williams for Glitter Magazine

Nafessa Williams deserves a lot more love and respect for her role as Anissa Pierce than she’s getting.

Don’t think we don’t see the racism within the queer community with your demands for representation, representation that only seems to matter when it’s wrapped up in a skinny white skinned package surrounded by a sea of more whiteness.

Send her some tweets. Leave comments on IG. We can do better than this.

Her Instagram story (is that what it’s called? i dunno i can only operate like two or three social media sites with any fluency)… Anyway, there’s a nice video at the end where she reflects on her experience at CC and how she’s grateful to have a chance to meet fans, particularly lesbian ones, who let her know how much of an impact BL is having. It’s a far cry from some of the usual treatment queer fans get and something we should definitely encourage if we want to keep seeing more of that and less of “here’s your scraps now go away.”

Okay, can I just say that I love how Anissa wants to save the world, be a larger-than-life-advocate, help everyone and take everything on, and Jennifer just wants a normal teenage life, to go to prom, go to college, get married, and be a mother, and NEITHER GIRLS ARE SHAMED FOR THE RESPECTIVE PATHS THEY WANT TO TAKE. Neither one gets put down to make the other one’s choices look better. Both of their choices are recognized as valid life choices that they have the autonomy and self-awareness to make.

I think Anissa is ALL jeff but she has Lynn’s facial expressions and mannerisms, Jennifer is just Jeff’s child that Lynn carried Lol she’s the wildcard

Nah I don’t agree. I think they are both a combo of them both. Anissa has more of the “helping people and fight for what’s right activism” from Jeff in her via action probably than Jennifer does right now but she’s older. And honestly Lynn has that same way about her, but she thinks and plans before action and Jeff and both girls act before they think just like Jeff.

They both have their mother’s academic interest (Lynn has an MD and PHD) which really can come from them both because Jeff was just as invested in school and education too. Anissa is not only a part-time teacher but a med student and we just found out Jennifer plans to go to Harvard. And Jennifer definitely is an observer, can read people, and will call out what she sees just like her mama too.

They take traits from them both. And big ups for on point casting and cast chemistry cause Anissa looks more like Lynn and Jennifer more like Jeff but they all look like family and act like one too

I think Anissa became a med student due to Lynn’s influence as well.

I really just wanna give a shoutout to Black Lightning for giving us Anissa Pierce, the first lesbian superhero I’ve ever seen in a tv series. (and ever, actually.)

I love how her family accepted her sexuality, how her sexuality is part of the series, how she can date women and it’s not glossed over, it’s not for male consumption. How the one sex scene we’ve seen so far was once again, not for the male gaze.

How she is not pressured into a relationship with a man against her will, how she is not forced to hide from her family and friends.

Thanks to Black Lightning for creating a lesbian superhero that is strong, intelligent, independent, badass and giving hope to every young lesbian out there.
