Given the current human rights disaster in Gaza, and the fact that Shavuot is coming up and it is therefore yet another opportunity for Jews to be charitable, I have attempted to compile a small and handy list of organisations working towards peace or related goals in Israel and Palestine, in the hope that all you people (including non-Jews: this is for you too!) who want to help in some small concrete way will be able to find an organisation you’d like to support.
B’Tselem: The Israeli Information Centre for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, working to end the occupation by documenting human rights abuses in the occupied territories.
Breaking the Silence: An organisation of veterans of the Israeli forces, publishing testimonies of the realities of life in the occupied territories, in the hope of ending the occupation.
Medical Aid for Palestinians: Delivering health and medical care to Palestinian communities affected by conflict, occupation and displacement, including providing emergency medical aid at times of crisis.
Combatants for Peace: An organisation of Israeli and Palestinian former combatants, working to promote dialogue and non-violence, with the aim of ending the occupation and finding a peaceful solution to the conflict.
Gisha: The Legal Centre for Freedom of Movement, working to protect the freedom of movement of Palestinians, especially Gaza residents, by promoting rights guaranteed by international and Israeli law.
The Galilee Society: The Arab National Society for Health, Research and Services (R.A.), working to achieve equitable health, environmental and socio-economic conditions, and to increase development opportunities for Palestinian Arabs inside Israel.

He has been full body paralyzed for about 5 years now due to multiple fractures on the spine he got in an accident. He used to me the most reliable and hard working person i know, he had to adapt to his current state, which include getting sick a lot due to the weakened immune system of his body. He had multiple surgeries done in the past years just to keep him alive and cant breathe on his own anymore. he is at the intensive care unit for the moment and the doc said he’s not gonna make it much longer his body had to fight so much he is getting weaker every day. They put him in an artificial coma so he doesn’t have to suffer from the pain he’s going through.
The hospital is roughly about 2 hours away from where we live and of course we want to be with him for the time he has left i feel bad for asking for others help who aren’t involved in this but my mother cant work at the moment shes emotionally unstable, we all are for now yet we have to pay for the gas and the high hospital parking fees if you cant help its fine but please pray for him his chance to survive is almost none but whatever happens we want to be there for him i don’t want my mom to worry about how were gonna survive the month

Internet, I am a queer researcher of queer health and I have something to say.
A few weeks back, a study went viral about the relationship between marriage equality policy and queer teen suicide rates, and a lot of people reacted thusly: “queer mental health is better when we’re not discriminated against! BREAKING: SKY IS BLUE, WATER IS WET”
This happens a lot. People see research about a thing ~Everyone Already Knows~ and they mock it. Now I want to make two things really clear:
1. Everyone does not already know.
2. This shit can lose these projects their funding.
Did you know that media coverage is a crucial factor in funding allocation? When we submit our application for grant renewal, we have to provide a list of news articles about our research so they can decide whether the public cares enough about us to let us keep doing our work. And most research doesn’t get all that much coverage, so individual reactions can really matter. If the primary reaction to our publications is eyerolling, we legitimately might not be able to continue.
I’ve seen some frustration from people who believe this research funding would be better put to use “actually helping” the affected populations instead of–I don’t know, pinning them under microscopes or whatever it is they think we do. But funding for policy initiatives is driven by research. I know you wish politicians would listen to individual voices telling them where the problems are, but that’s honestly not a smart way to direct limited resources. We need solid evidence. And a lot of the areas that need the most attention aren’t obvious–who knew bisexual people are at a much higher risk for physical and mental health disparities than gay and lesbian people? Who would have guessed that transgender folks are more likely than any other group (including straight people) to be military veterans, but overwhelmingly don’t claim their benefits? I’m sure some people noticed these patterns, but they definitely weren’t common knowledge within the queer communities I’ve grown up around, and those findings are leading to direct action as we speak.
I get that it can be frustrating to feel like your identity is being reduced to facts and figures for the benefit of red tape. But trust me, the researchers aren’t your enemy here. Most of us are queer too. All of us are just as frustrated by this crap as you are. We are doing our best, and I swear to you this work really is making a difference. Please don’t sabotage it.

It’s an opportunity most young musicians only dream of, the chance to attend The Julliard School in New York City.
And William Leathers, a 17-year-old from Toronto, was one of the three trumpeters this year given that chance.
Leathers auditioned and was accepted to the school’s elite undergraduate music program — something that gives him a chance to learn from some of the best in the world.
“I just want to be the best musician I can be,” Leathers told CBC Toronto’s Dwight Drummond Monday.. “I want to do well in every genre.”
But his acceptance came at a cost, a $364,000 cost over four years to be exact.
My name is William Franklyn Leathers, and I was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I’ve been playing the piano since the age of four, and when I was 12 years old, I became the youngest trumpeter accepted into the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, as well as the Halton Mississauga Youth Orchestra. So it was a dream come true for me when I received my acceptance letter to The Juilliard School, since I’m one of only three trumpeters that were accepted to Juilliard this year.
The biggest challenge for me, right now, is being able to cover tuition and housing expenses. My parents are doing their best, but right now we’re in a bit of a funding shortfall. The total cost for Juilliard is $71,000 in US dollars per year for four years, which comes out to roughly $91,000 every year in Canadian dollars. We’ve been able to put together about $25,500 so far, and unfortunately scholarships and grants are harder to come by as an international student. So I’m raising money to at least cover the first year, and we’ll see where it goes from there.
I’ve wanted to go to Juilliard for as long as I can remember, and I’ll never forget the look on my parents’ face when we opened the acceptance letter. But the reality is, there’s a pretty big gap between what our family can come up with, and what it costs for tuition, housing, and books. So if you can find it in your heart to help, my family and I would appreciate it so much.
