god okay at the gym today i was watching CNN and this stupid fucking white male anchor had a south asian guy as one of the guests or whatever, and they were talking about harvard’s discriminatory policy toward asian american applicants. basically harvard’s approach iterates that without the subjective personality metric, harvard’s campus population would be 43% asian, and thus the quotas, which cap the asian population at 19%, are necessary to preserve diversity. so naturally the south asian guy was talking about how racist this is. and the motherfucking white male anchor waxes lyrical about how he wants his white kids to be around black and latinx people so that they get a “diverse education with multiple perspectives”. as if asian americans don’t contribute to diversity! frankly this whole thing reeks of “asians are overpopulated so we need to rid the world of them” tbh. and naturally the south asian guy was like “wtf are you talking about, that’s quite literally racist against asian americans and it tokenizes black and latinx people as well” and of course the fucking cracker was like “you misunderstood me, you’re reading into this too much, blah blah blah”. when will white men die? 

full offense but this really is the model minority myth in action and it’s why i’ve always fucking said that the myth doesn’t just serve to impose positive stereotypes on asian americans. its primary function is to make invisible the racialized struggles of asian people so that white supremacist capitalism can usurp asian labor. 

not only do white people routinely erase the diversity of asian people, but they also continually try and erase white supremacist, colonialist, and imperialist brutality against asians. european countries colonized so much of south asia and southeast asia. europe + the US occupied china through spheres of influence. USA dropped two nuclear bombs on japan and interned japanese americans. the US killed numerous vietnamese civilians for the sake of imperialism. the US continues to exert an imperialist influence in the korean peninsula, in guam, in okinawa, in the philippines. britain fucking drained every last resource from india and enacted two genocidal famines in the region of bengal. winston churchill said that indians were worse than germans. britain then left the south asian subcontinent with a bloody partition of punjab and of bengal, effectively contributing to the bengali genocide of 1971. the US invaded iraq and afghanistan and destroyed both countries, it installed a dictator in iran. britain colonized yemen. france colonized lebanon and syria. USA, britain, france, canada, and its allies hurl bombs and drone strikes in pakistan, in yemen, in iraq, in syria, directly leading to the rise of reactionary groups within those countries, such as ISIS. the US has enacted brutal sanctions against north korea and has prevented korean reunification for its own purposes. 

and this doesn’t even begin to cover american discrimination against asian immigrants, beginning with the chinese exclusion act and vile xenophobia and racism against east asian immigrants. or how today, south and southeast asian immigrants face immense violence. or the resurgence in anti-sino bias. 

it’s so fucking easy to forget that asian americans actually do face racism to because white people are so good at pretending that every asian leads an easy life and isn’t racialized and that all asians look and act and think the same.

There were similar quotas in place, and the same justifications for
them, against Jews at Harvard in the 1920s-1930s. The whole “we don’t
evaluate for merit but for ~~personality~~” is a dogwhistle for
discriminating against whoever is getting the model minority myth
applied to them at a given time. It’s not a positive myth at all and it encourages discrimination, stereotyping, and violence.

I always feel like Irish students and characters got no love in Harry Potter (Seamus Finnigan was a huge stereotype, even if he was likable), so consider:

☛ Students speaking Irish amongst themselves and splicing Latin with Irish to create new spells (or disasters)

☛ The Quidditch team having Cú Chulainn in their fireworks instead of a leprechaun

☛ A regional magical sport which is essentially hurling but with sliotars that can move once on the ground in whatever direction they choose, and occasionally fly away from players when they lose momentum in midair. Not practiced officially in Hogwarts (yet) but students start to band together to form a club for the game.

☛ Irish Mythological and historical figures being cited as witches, wizards, or having other magical significance e.g. Cú Chulainn being a werewolf as a result of actually receiving a bite from Culann’s hound before killing it (explaining his “distortions”), The Morrígan being an animagus (turns into a crow), Deirdre having Veela blood (people literally killing each other to get in her pants)

☛ Oscar Wilde is a noted wizard and author. He knew Dorian Gray, who attempted to gain eternal youth by creating a horcrux, but eventually fell into madness and destroyed his own horcrux, killing himself. Wilde, while distraught, accidentally let this slip to a muggle friend, and covered it up by writing a story about it. Wilde’s own portrait now hangs in Hogwarts. He offers writing help, life advice, and complains about the wallpaper opposite him.

-Land-use history didn’t begin with European colonization and if, like me, your research focuses on post-settlement land use it’s important to acknowledge that fact.

-The great American wilderness is a grossly inaccurate colonialist fantasy.

-Human influence, specifically that of indigenous people, is all over the ecology of what is currently called America.

-Human interaction with other organisms is not inherently negative
because it’s “unnatural.” We’re all family whether we want to admit it

HEY, SINCE WE’RE AT THIS TOPIC, CAN YOU GUYS PLEASE FINALLY PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT CHINA IS DOING TO UYGHURS.

China is planning on using surveillance in this area to soon punish jaywalkers, but China has already created a surveillance state in “Xinjiang” (occupied East Turkestan) to spy on Uyghurs and find “reasons” to detain them in camps where Chinese officials torture and brainwash them in an attempt to eradicate Uyghur culture and sinicize them.. and if those things don’t work, they kill them and discard their bodies into unmarked graves.

Chen Quanguo, the man who was also responsible for locking down Tibet (a region that also used to be Central Asia just like “Xinjiang”, and which borders on the Uyghur region) is taking levels of mass control to a new extreme. “Xinjiang” is being called the most heavily surveillanced police state in the world. There are surveillance cameras (some equipped with artificial intelligence) and facial recognition software, who even alert authorities if Uyghurs are walking “too fast”, are parked in the wrong spot or have strayed more then a couple meters from their homes and armored cars, tanks, and police officers patrolling everywhere. You can’t even step outside to go the grocery store without having to go through multiple security checks, police body checking you and even inspecting your phone. (x, x, x)

Guess what, China is also collecting biometric data (blood, fingerprints, iris scans, DNA,..) from Uyghurs under the fasade of a medical checkup that all Uyghurs are forced to get. THEY ARE STEALING UYGHURS’ BIOMETRIC DATA AND MANY UYGHURS DO NOT EVEN KNOW THAT THIS IS WHAT THE GOVERNMENT PROVIDED “MEDICAL CHECKUP” IS USED FOR. (x, x, x, x)

Uyghurs have NO freedom whatsoever in “Xinjiang”. The Chinese government sent letters to citizens of the region asking various questions like, “Are you Uyghur?”, “Do you have a job”, “Are you religious?”, etc. These letters were then collected, checked, and based on the score you received you were categorized as a “safe” or “unsafe person” and received different levels of freedom. Most Uyghurs however just ended up being detained in camps or thrown in prison based on their answers and even such things as showing interest in travelling abroad. (x, x, x)

Statistically speaking, in villages with a population of 2.000 people, usually about 400 to 500 of Uyghurs get detained in these camps – Some of them, for life – where 20 to 30 people are forced to share one 15 square meter room. (x)

But that’s not all! China has also forced Uyghurs to join a program that gives them a “Han Chinese relative” (another attempt to

sinicize

them), and those who refused to join the program were fired from their jobs, or if they worked as farmers, had their land taken away. Uyghurs are also being told to marry Han Chinese, and some are even forced to. (x, x, x, x)

China has also sent officials to live in Uyghur houses so they can actively make sure that Uyghurs are not engaging in cultural things and are following the rules of the ruling communistist party. (x, x)

That’s still not all though! China is also harvesting organs of Uyghur prisoners, Chinese agents are spying on and harassing Uyghurs overseas (Canada, America, Australia, etc.) and are threatening their family members stuck in “Xinjiang”, Uyghurs living overseas have been ordered by China (last year already. (Why? We don’t know!)) to return to their hometowns, but since many refused to because they knew if they complied they will get tortured and maybe even killed, China has started working together with various countries and has begun abducting and deporting Uyghurs back to China. (x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x) The list goes on. If I were to list all the things that I know China is doing we would be sitting there till tomorrow. And if I were to list all the things China is doing that we don’t even know of yet, we would probably be sitting here until next year. 

You might be asking yourself why China is doing that. It’s because Uyghurs are Central Asians and a part of the Turkic ethnic group. (Uyghurs are also primarily Muslim, however since China’s treatment of Chinese Muslims and other East Asian Muslims (ex: Hui Muslims) varies greatly from their treatment of Uyghurs, it is very clear that the reason behind this is not [primarily] Islamophobia but Racism.)

Uyghurs don’t get a fair trial either. The courts work with the party and tell the lawyers appointed to Uyghurs to do the same. They always end up picking the hardest punishment imaginable, like in the recent case where a 16 year old Uyghur child was sentenced to 13 years in prison for visiting Turkey. (x, x) Courts often even re-trial cases of Uyghurs who have already been found “guilty” and have done their time and send them back to prison. (x)

This article above is speaking of what China plans on doing and you are all worried about it, but “Xinjiang” is already a surveillance state and the ethnic cleansing of Uyghurs has been well underway for quiet some time now.

I left out a lot of the things that China is doing because if I listed everything it would be too long and nobody would read it all anyway, but I would like to add one thing that I can’t believe slipped my mind to begin with:

China plans on building a “Great Wall” around “Xinjiang” (occupied East Turkestan).

“Efforts are on to make the border security stricter and for constructing a great wall of steel in the Xinjiang province. Precautions will be taken that there are no gaps in the security on the border of the province. It will be ensured that the important areas of the province are fully secure. Use of technology will be increased along the border and the roads and infrastructure will be developed” clarified Xinjiang Governor, Shohrat Zakir. 

CHINA WANTS TO BUILD THIS WALL NOT ONLY TO CUT THE UYGHUR REGION OFF FROM THE REST OF CHINA, BUT TO CUT IT OFF FROM THE REST OF THE WORLD. It is already complicated enough to get information on what is happening in “Xinjiang” because China is actively trying to keep stories from getting out, and now imagine how much harder it would be if China built that wall around the region. 

China wants to build this wall so that no Uyghur will be able to escape, so that they can put every single one of them through ethnic cleansing, away from the eyes of the world and without any interference of human rights groups trying to save them.

So the Republican argument is that the Republican decision to freeze Puerto Rico in a second class state so that vulture capitalists can dismantle it, and the Republican decision to refuse Puerto Rico the same quality of disaster relief that Texas and Florida got and make them take loans instead of getting desperately needed funding even though the people of Puerto Rico are American citizens because Republicans are racist has all been somehow a secret plot by the Democrats to get Republicans to render Puerto Rico nearly unlivable so that people have to move en masse to other states where their votes count and that therefore the citizen rights of Puerto Ricans need to be revoked to render it illegal for them to vote in the states where they live.  How Democrats, while begging and pleading with Republicans to do the decent thing, are somehow forcing Republicans to be so greedy and racist that their cruelty is still killing people on Puerto Rico is not explained.  Republicans, your racism is showing.

It was a relatively quiet summertime shift in the emergency room at Montreal children’s hospital when the child – an Inuk preschooler – was rushed in on a stretcher. He had been airlifted in from a remote community after a motor vehicle accident, and he was entirely alone. Suddenly he began to cry. We couldn’t speak his language, and couldn’t find a hospital interpreter. Had he developed a sudden headache? Should we rush him to the CT scanner?

While trying to figure out how to proceed, we found someone who spoke Inuktitut, and learned the heartbreaking reason the child was crying: he missed his mother, who had to stay behind, more than 1,500km away.

Hundreds of critically ill children in remote northern communities are flown by ambulance planes to pediatric emergency centres in Montreal or Quebec City every year. And yet the Quebec Aeromedical Evacuations (Évaq, in its French acronym) – the provincial entity responsible for medical air transport – won’t let caregivers join them. Instead, parents must take a commercial flight, often several days later depending on flight schedules, seat availability and weather.

This is heartbreaking and incredibly dangerous to do. Catching symptoms early often leads to a better recovery, and nobody knows the child better than their own family. It is absolutely senseless that Quebec allows this to be done to these families.

It also places a financial burden on a family who are already faced with the possibility of paying for medical supplies for their child. But they also have to fork out money for a flight? Most people don’t just have that cash lying around. Especially when prices of food and necessities in Canada’s north can be obscenely high as well.

Good evening everybody! Just in case you’d all thought I’d had enough and shut up about Gàidhlig I’m here to prove you wrong.

Today Edinburgh City Council posted about Gàidhlig, in Gàidhlig.

This is great and it’s wonderful to see, obviously.

Here are some of the responses.

Obviously there were Gàidhlig responses and several supportive English responses too. But I want to highlight some of what Gàidhlig speakers are subject to when the language is even used in a public sphere. Even just *seeing* it seems to set people off.

This has a very real impact on people, don’t think that it doesn’t. Someone please tell me why a language and culture deserves this much hatred on a regular basis? Do the native speakers of this language really deserve this being thrown at them?

Scotland’s a progressive and left wing nation, it welcomes all peoples, cultures and languages!
