I am genuinely unclear on why a school shooting victim would relevant to the business of the Centers for Disease Control

@tanoraqui There is a law that prevents the CDC from studying gun violence.  It’s the NRA’s fault, like so many things, they keep blocking attempts to get the law repealed.

Oh! Thank you.

uhhhh yikes?? how is comparing school shootings to the (ONGOING) aids crisis at all appropriate & also why use “herstory” when talking about the activism of david wojnarowicz & other gay men, like??? what does this even mean?

Jesus fucking christ. It’s government sanctioned large scale murder in the interests of lobbyists and nationalism over those of the innocent. Both FDA and CDC are culpable in denying vulnerable groups valuable research that could be used to SAVE LIVES.

The reference to “herstory” is a cheeky reference to how gay men may call each other she/her. The person calling it “herstory” is a literal, actual gay man.

And if you actually listened to ACT UP alumni, you’d know they’re fine with it.

This kinda instinctive outrage to kids HONORING and continuing the legacy of gay protests by keeping the memory alive KNOWING how often it has been erased is understandable but I really think people need to take a step back and think about why it pisses them off.

How is calling back to LGBT history and reminding the US Government that they still haven’t even washed the blood on their hands from the AIDS Crisis as their palms fill up with the blood of kids (and Latino/Black LGBT people from the Pulse Shooting) a bad thing? How are KIDS knowing LGBT history when most adults don’t fucking it a bad thing?

I know your intentions are good but I’m kinda wondering what you think your outrage will accomplish besides isolating LGBT history from current events and leaving it a sort of contextless void in our general national history.

while i get and agree with the fact that gay people should probably play gay people and gay stories are best written by gay people, the fervor to prove that “straight people shouldn’t play gay characters!!” is what the interviewer used to forcibly out lee pace so like

idk maybe slow your roll and realize that like… actors can be closeted, content creators can be closeted, and tbh this “you can only write your own experiences, never write someone else’s” rhetoric is also a bigot’s fucking wet dream?? like the perfect excuse to never write diverse characters?? and to say that they have nothing in common with people who don’t look/love/exist the same way as them??

yeah, the author of simon vs the homo sapien’s agenda is a cis straight woman, which means love, simon (though directed by a married gay man with multiple gay characters played by gay/bi actors) is based on a novel written by a straight woman… but this straight woman literally ends her book acknowledging the LGBT teens who helped her write the book and make sure she was writing it appropriately.

this is the content we want

listen… EVERY SINGLE piece of media EVER involves some level of writing about experiences that are not your own, especially if it’s diverse. even bland stories just about white people involves an author writing about genders that are not their own. if you want a story with characters of color, white authors are going to have to write about those perspectives. if you want gay characters in every story, straight authors are gonna have to write about those perspectives. even LGBT narratives might involve gay authors writing about bi characters or cis authors writing about trans characters.

what we HOPE FOR when they do that is that they talk to people… actually belonging to those groups to learn what is and isn’t appropriate and true to life. which is what the author of simon vs the homo sapien’s agenda did.

it’s exactly what she did. she literally worked in a support group for LGBT and GNC kids, saw they did not have cute love stories written for them after they told her this, and then worked with them to give them the love story they craved.

this is a good thing. this is progress for lgbt people. this is the path we need to walk towards getting LGBT content created by LGBT authors.

when you attempt to take the ~moral ground on protesting this film, all you’re doing is telling people who fund these projects that gay products don’t sell. they don’t get the nuance of what you’re going for. and, chances are, you’re looking like a fucking hypocrite, because i can promise you most of the canon gay characters you stan profit a cishet somehow (if they’re even canon).

so, y’unno, as someone who has read simon vs the homo sapien’s agenda AND seen the fucking movie let me tell you!! it’s fine!! it’s diverse beyond having gay character, it’s written respectively, and it hit home on a lot of experiences i WISH i had as a gay teen. it’s corny, it’s silly, and it’s all i ever would have wanted at 13, 14, 15

if you don’t want to see it, just fucking say so! but don’t act like you’re doing it on moral grounds. you can just… not like a movie or not want to see it without it being some moral victory.

Sweet generalization.

It’s not about whether a character is trans or gay. Gay characters make sense. People have been gay for millennia. Trans however. Not the case. In a high fantasy setting, how in the balls are they going to perform surgery where they change the sex of the character??? It makes no sense at all. They’d have to explain it. And remember, this is high fantasy, Game of Thrones is also in that category. This is a time where they would reach into your body with an object strikingly similar to a salad tossing spoon to yank out a small piece of arrowhead. Pretty sure they hadn’t figured out a surgery as complex as a sex change…

The people complaining that there aren’t enough gay/trans people in stuff like this are just as bad if not moreso than the people who complain about gay/trans people being in stuff like this.

Create your own fantasy world filled with nothing but gay/trans people. Make it so that being heterosexual is the minority. All the power to you. Good luck trying to create it.

You don’t have to have surgery to be transgender. Lots of transgender people don’t. Transgender people, people who identify with the gender not corresponding with their birth sex, have existed before the surgery. And the existence of and recognition of a third sex or dual sex existed in pre-modern times in lots of places are the world.

So, for one, your “how in the balls are they going to perform surgery“ question doesn’t actually matter. They don’t need to in order for transgender people to exist.

But if they did want to include transgender people who undergo physical changes to reflect their gender/sexual identity, in a HIGH FANTASY world, there’s actually a really easy answer to that:

*ahem*

“How are you going to make someone trans in a fantasy setting full of magic spells, potions, and artifacts?”

shout out to the elixir of sex shift for covering more than just a gender binary.

also lets not forget that in ye old days (aka time of the ancient greeks (aka the bc years)) that people drank the urine of pregnant mares to feminize themselves. like, trans people find a way 😉

…the fucking Sumerians had trans people, brosky.

Sumerians.

They didn’t even have fucking iron, but they had trans women.

dude lemme find you a fucking. girdle of sex change from 1st edition

woah what’s that?? the first edition efreet cover???

OH HEY ITS A FUCKING GIRDLE OF SEX CHANGE AND THERES ALSO A POSSIBILITY IT REMOVES ALL SEX CHARACTERISTICS FROM THE WEARER

it’s on page 145 of the dmg 1st ed. want an easier-to-read screenshot of a pdf??

tldr fuck you

About trans people being modern…

Also good authors can write characters who are trans/non-binary in settings that don’t speak about gender the same way we do. Example is An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon.

I really just wanna give a shoutout to Black Lightning for giving us Anissa Pierce, the first lesbian superhero I’ve ever seen in a tv series. (and ever, actually.)

I love how her family accepted her sexuality, how her sexuality is part of the series, how she can date women and it’s not glossed over, it’s not for male consumption. How the one sex scene we’ve seen so far was once again, not for the male gaze.

How she is not pressured into a relationship with a man against her will, how she is not forced to hide from her family and friends.

Thanks to Black Lightning for creating a lesbian superhero that is strong, intelligent, independent, badass and giving hope to every young lesbian out there.

homophobes are not allowed to use computers because the inventor of the computer was gay

People think this is just a joke but Alan Turing was the inventor of the computer and his sexuality was illegal in his time (which was not even 100 years ago) and he was arrested. They put him on drugs that destroyed his genius brain and committed suicide a year after being covicted. He was gay and a war hero as well. He helped to break enigma which was a German code that they put all their messages through. He shorted WWII by two years and saved so many lives in the process.

Friendly reminder that if not for Alan Turing you wouldn’t be reading this post and we might be ruled by the nazis

The Alan Turing statue on my campus

always reblog 🙂

Friendly reminder the “drugs” they put Alan Turing on was synthetic estrogen, under the name Stilboestrol.
