– there is no single, unified LGBT community that agrees on absolutely everything – and that’s okay. a good thing, even.
– 30 year olds are not “elders”. neither are 40 year olds. old LGBT people exist.
– LGBT people did not go through a hard reset during the AIDS crisis. people from that era are still alive and their voices are still important.
– the consequences of the AIDS crisis are still ongoing and people around the world still need treatment for HIV/AIDS.
– intersex is not “cis nonbinary”, and many cishet intersex people are distinctly uncomfortable being perceived as LGBT – it’s important to acknowledge and respect their experiences, too
that’s all i can think of for now. be critical, be safe, have fun out there.

These are all photos from Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, which is a huge pride event. Which ones are too kinky to be there?
With a sweeping statement like “kink doesn’t belong at Pride” it feels like we’re just ignoring the entire queer and subversive nature of Pride events worldwide. Just like in the US, the first marches in Sydney were riots which were met with police violence. Over the years, as the culture became more accepting, Mardi Gras became more of a party. But at its heart and soul it’s a giant shout of “we’re here, we’re queer, get over it.” And “kink” and some specific queer identities are not separable.
So sure, kink practiced by straight people doesn’t belong at Pride because Pride is not an event for straight people, and being kinky doesn’t make you queer. But for the queer people for whom it’s a part of their entire identity, then I want to see them celebrating all the facets of who they are, for at least one day of the year.
Signed, I marched in Pride wearing a goddamn motherfucking corporate polo shirt one year and I still haven’t recovered from how awful I felt being there but not as all of my queer self.

In San Francisco Leather Culture is very much linked to the gay community because the Miracle Mile known currently as SoMa was once home to over 30 queer businesses. A lot of leather culture started because queer men brought to SF after WWII couldn’t return home because of dishonorable discharges. The businesses there was essentially home to queer men rebuilding the comraderie they had during war time… as part of Motorcycle clubs… without the motorcycles (the old guard)The Miracle Mile was the area that Life Magazine did it’s famous article “homosexuality in America”.
It is still home to Folsom Street which has quite a few leather businesses. And Folsom Street Fair and Up Your Alley (Dore Alley) are Street festivals celebrating kink that raises funds for community programs helping people displaced by gentrification and also many various queer community based organizations.
So yeah kink and leather is a huge part of SF pride but like the Radical Faeries Village (they got some clothing optional rave going on), Leather Alley also has their sections of SF Pride behind tarps where volunteers check for ID before entry.
So at least for San Francisco Pride, the leather and kink community in my opinion belongs because they do an large amount of precautions to prevent minors from entering spaces where people are participating in what can be scene as sexual situations. And all the major leather and kink groups do a lot of advocacy and fundraising for queer causes.
Ive been going to pride when i was little and there were always leather guys there and i turned out ok. I just thought they were policemen because of the hats.
this pride i’d be so happy if people who aren’t bisexual stopped commenting on bisexuality, bisexual experiences, bisexual subjectivities, and bisexual history, especially if they haven’t met actual bi people off this site and/or read anything written or created by an actual bi person lol
