when people in other countries imagine parts of their country seceding (slash becoming independent) do they picture them physically floating off into the ocean, or are americans just weird

I’ve seen enough animations of Scotland being sawed off by Bugs Bunny to think it’s not just Americans.

oh-glasgow:

Imagine anyone looking at this article;

and then going “hmm, we might starve, be unable to drive our cars to work, and run out of medical supplies… but at least Scotland isn’t independent.”

Brexit is already proving to be a disaster. And a hard Brexit with no deal in place is going to be even worse.

It’s time for Scotland to leave the UK.

How is Scotland covering recent developments in Catalunya and other regions of Spain?

ayeforscotland:

love-and-socialism:

It is mixed, to say the least.

Scots independence people are welcoming of the fact that Catalonia voted for their own independence, but are also dismayed at least two things; 1) the tactics that the Spanish government have done to clamp down on autonomy that the Catalan region had, as well as jailing the separatist leaders. 2) the inaction of the EU over what has been seen as a subversion of democracy. Because what is the EU without respecting and ensuring democracy in its member states?

One of the arguments was used by the No campaign was the Spain would veto any membership application for an independent Scotland to rejoin the EU because they would have wanted to send a message to Catalonia that they too, would have been outside the EU. Of course, this was untrue, but then the entire No campaign was based around scaremongering and lies.

Anyway, I digress. The media continues to cover the events in Catalonia, probably more so than any other political situation in Europe.

Worth noting that Scottish newspaper, The National was commended by Catalonians for their coverage of the referendum and the aftermath.
